Carlos Serres established his winery in Haro, La Rioja in 1896 – a time when the French wine industry was being devastated by Phylloxera. He sought a style of wine that would be appreciated by the growing international wine markets to replace the popular styles from Bordeaux and elsewhere that were being lost. The modern style of Rioja was about to be created.
